Charity FAQ
Helping people is not easy. There are many systematic imbalances and injustices that require more then just money to solve. However, donating money to organizations that have developed the infrastructure and resources to address the issues we face is one of the ways you can help create the world you’d like to see. The following questions are here to help us guide our positive intentions to a desired outcome. At the end of the day, we can only support people to help themselves — or, as Pater Josef Kentenich put it, “Erziehung zur Selbsterziehung” which means — “Raise them to raise themselves”.
- How to choose the right charity?
Start with a broad search and narrow it from there. You can use websites like GreatNonprofits.org, Philanthropedia and GiveWell.org to research specific charities — what they fund, how they operate . You can find more information from Dan Pallotta’s latest Ted talk about how to choose the right charity.
- How to be sure you are giving to a reputable charity organization?
Charity organizations need to adhere to high standards. All charity organizations are audited regularly and evaluated based on their performance and credibility. If you want to learn more about how to evaluate charity organizations, check out the charity navigator.
- Should I donate to a small charity or a big one?
According to GiveWell, overhead ratio is the worst reason to pick a charity. When it comes to fledgling nonprofits and charities, expenses may not necessarily reflect the organization’s ability to change lives. Size is therefore an indicator for a good non-profit, but often it is better to look at their achievements.
Getting the most bang for your bucks?
The National Center for Charitable Statistics counts more than 1.5 million tax-exempt organizations in the United States, so finding the right fit for your giving might seem challenging. But it’s not that important if you can find the perfect charity: just like learning an instrument, it doesn’t matter which piece you are practicing first, as long as you keep practicing. The same holds true for finding the right charity.
We make a living by what we get
But we make a life by what we give.Winston Churchill
Be the change you want to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi
Where there is charity and wisdom there is neither fear nor ignorance.
St. Franz of Assisi
We do not change this world by dreaming dreams or seeing visions, but by our consumer decisions and kind actions.
